Colunus day...maybe?

Today, legally claimed a federal holiday by Roosevelt in 1934 (in response to heavy lobbying by the Knights of Columbus organization)  celebrates the Italian explorer of 1492 (Christopher Columbus). Celebrations from the people of Italian accessory and catholic faith started celebrating his exploration achievements as early as the late 1700s. Columbus was looking for China and didn't realize he had a "new" land discovery until his third time visiting the Americas. I suppose by that point, the damage was done and exploring had turned into trouble-making for the peoples of the "new" land.

In recent years, this holiday has been claimed- rather they renamed it-by the indigenous groups who have a long history of white American brutality: from explorers bring disease and slavery to the historical evidence of Columbus's 15-century humanity (ie, he enslaved and tortured those that opposed him and his leaders). In any state, whatever the name, the celebrations are in honor of who they are and what they are about. Parades, powwows, block parties, and even, some who just see it as a day off from work (to be honest, I didn't realize it was happening until my other said he had a 4 day weekend).

Our day has been a day inside. We all had a later morning than planned which threw everything off so we just stayed home and basically hunkered down today. I caught up on my Amazon book notifications and took my time eating meals of the day. Luna had a normal day of screens, pups, digging/playing outdoors, and even playing "bumper cars" where she bumped around things and had a jolly old time of it too until she kept catching corners. Tomorrow will be our Sunday prep for the week (haircut, laundry etcetera, etcetera). There is a playdate at one of the newly reopened parks in town so I am hoping we will make that and let the luna enjoy a bit of sun and socialization that ISN'T me or her father!
